How To Know When You Need BMW Brake Pads
Your BMW brake pads are designed to warn you before they fail completely. After 30 years of BMW brake repair, here’s what tells us it’s time:
- Squealing noise: This could be as simple as brake fluid needing replacement. It could also mean corrosion on your brake rotors or salt/sand between your brake pads.
- Grinding sound: Metal-on-metal contact (too late!)
- Brake warning light: Wear sensor has worn through, indicating time for replacement.
- Vibration when braking: Uneven pad wear, warped rotors, or rusty rotors.
- Pulling to one side: Uneven brake application, potentially a seized brake caliper.
- Longer stopping distance: Reduced friction material.
- Visible wear: Less than 3mm of pad material remaining.
BMW brake life differs based on driving style. City driving with frequent stops wears them faster than highway cruising. Track days? You might need a BMW brake pad change after one weekend.
Brake Fluid Service
BMW brake fluid is hygroscopic – absorbs water from air:
- Test shows over 3% water content? Time to flush
- Have to push your brake pedal further than expected? There is likely air in the system.
- Water causes internal corrosion on brake lines – Replacing brake lines is not fun!
- Boiling point drops dramatically with water, causing longer stopping distances.
- BMW recommends every 2 years.
